The company&#8217;s stock price took an 8% hit at the end of October after it reported an <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2019\/10\/30\/deutsche-bank-q3-2019-earnings.html\" target=\"_blank\">\u20ac832 million loss<\/a> for the third quarter of 2019, well below the \u20ac778 million loss analysts expected. While Deutsche Bank experienced a 13% decrease in revenues on the quarter, its Wall Street counterparts saw an average 11% gain of their own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Still, executives at the company claim that these losses are to be expected, and everything is <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2019\/10\/30\/deutsche-bank-q3-2019-earnings.html\" target=\"_blank\">going according to plan<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cOur results in the quarter are entirely in line with our plans. We are executing, I think, well against the strategic changes we announced in the summer,\u201d James von Moltke, chief financial officer at Deutsche Bank, told CNBC\u2019s Annette Weisbach.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>He added: \u201cOur net loss is a little better than our internal planning and our capital ratio at 13.4% stable quarter-on-quarter demonstrates what we set out.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With only 1,500 of an estimated 18,000 layoffs coming in the most recent quarter, many wonder if Deutsche Bank\u2019s biggest problems still lie ahead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Deutsche Bank isn\u2019t the only European financial institution that\u2019s facing major struggles. HSBC also had a third-quarter to forget, with <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/business\/companies\/article\/3035132\/hsbc-profit-falls-24-cent-protests-weigh-hong-kong-economy\" target=\"_blank\">net profits falling by 24%<\/a>. As a result, HSBC CFO Ewen Stevenson announced the company will undergo major structural changes <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2019\/10\/28\/hsbc-cfo-expect-material-action-against-struggling-business-units.html\" target=\"_blank\">in business areas which are faltering<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.goandgrow.eu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/European-banks-1024x571.png\" alt=\"European banks\" class=\"wp-image-25866\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cReturns are very, very weak across both of those businesses. We need to get those returns up, we haven\u2019t yet sized what that means in terms of the restructuring,\u201d he said, adding the bank is also trying to reduce complexity in its group operating structure to achieve some efficiency savings.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cWe\u2019ll come back to the market as part of our full-year results in February but, you should expect us to take some material action against those parts of our businesses,\u201d Stevenson said<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The company was already reeling after a <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2019\/08\/05\/hsbc-reports-h1-2019-earnings-says-ceo-john-flint-to-step-down.html\" target=\"_blank\">tumultuous summer<\/a>. CEO John Flint left the company less than 2-years into the job, and the bank announced it would have to lay-off up to 2% of its workforce which totals more than 230,000 employees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Recent <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/german-european-stability-prospects-unclear-after-thuringia-election\/a-51022595\" target=\"_blank\">voting in the German state of Thuringia<\/a> showed how both extreme parties on both the left and right are gaining momentum in Europe. The state\u2019s socialist Left Party won 31% of the vote while its far-right counterpart Alternative for Germany (AfD) garnered 23% of the vote, double its previous result.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This trend of extremism worries political experts who fear centrist coalition governments are a thing of the past:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.goandgrow.eu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Socialist-Left-Party-Germany-1024x768.png\" alt=\"Socialist Left Party Germany\" class=\"wp-image-25872\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>&#8220;If this happens in one regional election, you can count it as an isolated incident,&#8221; Dr. Hendrik Tr\u00e4ger, a lecturer in German and European party politics at the University of Leipzig, told DW. &#8220;But when this happens in three regional elections, it&#8217;s a clear sign of a nationwide trend.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the United States is focusing on toughening its stance on immigration, China is taking advantage of a <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/news\/china\/diplomacy\/article\/3035546\/tough-us-immigration-policy-could-be-key-china-winning\" target=\"_blank\">growing talent pool in the technology sector<\/a>. US President Donald Trump is doing his best to curb Chinese involvement in US tech companies, but has been unable to stop the influx of talent to China.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nowhere is this more true than in the field of artificial intelligence, says Ning Tao, president and partner of one of China\u2019s leading AI-focused venture capital businesses, Sinovation Ventures:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.goandgrow.eu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Artificial-intelligence-1024x737.png\" alt=\"Artificial intelligence\" class=\"wp-image-25878\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Tao said that as a US government crackdown on foreign influence spilled into academia, taking a toll on Chinese or Chinese-American researchers, China could benefit from Trump\u2019s anti-immigration policy.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cWhile the US is driving talent away, it is the perfect time for us to race to bring them back to China.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>The Chinese government wants world leadership in artificial intelligence by 2030, when the domestic industry is forecast to be worth about US$150 billion.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many highly educated foreign workers in America are <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2018\/04\/09\/trumps-war-on-immigration-causing-silicon-valley-brain-drain.html\" target=\"_blank\">opting to leave the country<\/a> once their work visa expires, acknowledging the difficulty of obtaining citizenship in the United States in the current political climate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Uber is expanding itself well outside of its ride-sharing application and into a <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2019\/10\/28\/uber-announces-deeper-push-into-financial-services-with-uber-money.html\" target=\"_blank\">global technology giant<\/a>. The company announced its newest division, Uber Money, which will give its 4 million drivers around the world access to a mobile wallet and bank account to process ride payments immediately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Peter Hazlehurst who will head the new division, sees this as an opportunity to introduce Uber as a <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2019\/10\/28\/uber-announces-deeper-push-into-financial-services-with-uber-money.html\" target=\"_blank\">reliable financial services company<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.goandgrow.eu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Uber-1024x576.png\" alt=\"Uber\" class=\"wp-image-25884\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cWe wanted to help everybody understand that there\u2019s a new part of Uber that\u2019s focused on financial services and that has a mission of giving people access to the type of financial services they were excluded from,\u201d Hazlehurst said in a phone interview.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This effort comes two years after Uber announced a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2017\/10\/25\/16547300\/uber-credit-card-barclays-rewards\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">branded credit card<\/a> that failed to gain much traction in the market.
